VMWare Horizon Client

A program called VMWare Horizon Client makes it possible for you to login to a UCO computer virtually from outside of the UCO.

In order to make use of a UCO computer from at your home, you need to:

1. Download the VMware Horizon client. You need know if you are using a MAC or PC and whether the PC is 32 bit or 64 bit. To find out which Windows you have please go to Control Panel and click on the System icon which will open a window displaying your system information.

        a. If you have 32bit windows please Click Here to download VMware

        b. If you have 64bit windows please Click Here to download VMware

        c. If you have MAC OS please Click Here to download VMware

The UCO does not use the "local mode option"

2.  Go to where you saved this software and run it (ie on a PC this is achieved by double-clicking on it), so as to install the software on your device.

3.  Click on "Next" , and accept the licence conditions, to install the program, following the standard prompts without changing any features or settings.

4.  When you get to a screen where it wants to know the name of the "Default View Connection Server", enter:
vm.bso.ac.uk and then click on "Next" following the standard prompts without changing any features or settings, until finally you click on "Install".

5.  If the above install finishes successfully, you will be presented with a "Finish" button, and a request to restart your computer;  you will then have the VMWare View Client program installed on your device.  You will then be able to run it whenever you like--just as you would any other program you have on your device.  [ Note:  The above comments relate to installing on a PC;  installation on other devices will not be identical in every detail to the above, but Step 4 will always be required. ]

6.  When you run the VMWare Horizon client program, you will see a window like this:

At this point you need only to click on "Connect".

7.  The program will then take you to a window like this:

At this point, login using the same username and password that you would use if you were at the UCO, and click on "Login".

What this warning message is alerting you to is that VMware Horizon Client can connect you to virtual computers that are associated with particular actual Rooms at the UCO.  The significance of this is that, particularly if you are connecting at the UCO, you should always connect to a virtual computer in the room where you are sitting—since that will be the one that is connected to the printer in that room.  If you are connecting from home and/or are not interested in printing, then select the:  LRC – 310 VDI Pool and then click on “OK”.

8.  The program will then take you to a window like this:

At this point click on "Connect" and wait for one minute.

9. ~The program will then take you to a window like this:  (which is the choice of Room, or of VDI Pool, that you were warned about at step 7, above)

Choose the Room that you are in (or “LRC – 310” if you are at home and not intending to print anything).

10. ~ At this point click on "Connect" and wait for one minute.

11. ~You will then be presented with a virtual UCO computer desktop--with access to the same folders and programs as users in Room 310 at the UCO receive.

12. ~Note that you should logoff when you finish--and that if you leave your session unattended for more than 15 minutes it will terminate and you will lose any unsaved work. NEVER SAVE ANYTHING TO THE DESKTOP, as it will be lost as soon as your sessions ends;  instead, always save to a Network Drive (eg H:) and then you will not lose any work.
